The new Guide to the Blue Plaques and a new Pocket Guide to the Blue Plaques will be launched on Saturday September 5, you are invited to call in between 10.30-12.30 at the SVA Headquarters in Church Street.
The new books will both be on sale from the Museum on Friday September 4 and at the Book Launch on Saturday September 5.

The last edition was in 2019, this new Guide to the Blue Plaques is different in several respects. All the entries are rewritten and include new information that was not previously available. Many of the illustrations have not been previously shown.
There are now 87 plaques, 24 new sites have been added, a number of which are in Sidbury, Sidford and Salcombe Regis. As in the previous edition the emphasis is on interesting and often surprising stories rather than dry facts, it is a history of the Sid Valley told through its buildings and memorable individuals.
The Blue Plaque scheme was launched in 1992 and it has been positively received by both residents and visitors. The Sid Vale Association should be justifiably proud of the initiative.

'Archaeology in the Sid Valley and beyond' by Laura Beckwith
Laura curates our museum archaeology collection and has written a guide to sites in the Sid Valley. It is the SVA's first publication on this important subject and she highlights the large number of hillforts/castles and barrows nearby, the most in Devon. Laura is an archaeology graduate of University of York and is presently the Finds Liaison Officer at South West Heritage Trust in Taunton. She has a soft spot for Roman coinage and pottery.

The Sidmouth and East Beach Coastal Defence Scheme is one of the most significant coastal resilience projects currently being delivered on the Jurassic Coast. The project has been developed in response to the increasing risks posed by coastal erosion, storm damage, and flooding, which threaten homes, businesses, infrastructure, and the local economy. As sea levels continue to rise and storms become more frequent and intense, coastal communities such as Sidmouth face growing challenges in adapting to a changing climate. The scheme has been designed to provide long-term protection for the town while respecting the area's unique natural and historic environment.

This talk will explore the challenges facing Sidmouth's coastline, the science behind coastal flooding and erosion, and how engineers, environmental specialists, and local partners have worked together to develop a sustainable solution. It will also examine the role of climate change in shaping future coastal risks and discuss the lessons that other communities can learn from the Sidmouth and East Beach project. The presentation is intended for a broad audience and will provide an accessible insight into how modern coastal defence schemes help safeguard people, places, and the natural environment for future generations.
Steve Donnelly has extensive experience and technical expertise as a senior civil engineer with a career specialising in flood risk management, infrastructure delivery, and project leadership in both the public and private sector. An experienced marine and coastal project professional, he has led the delivery of complex infrastructure projects that protect communities, support economic growth and enhance the natural environment. As Project Manager for the £21m Sidmouth and East Beach Coastal Defence Scheme, he is overseeing the design, procurement, technical delivery, licensing, risk management and stakeholder engagement.
Steve Kershaw is a seasoned maritime and construction professional with over 20 years of experience managing land and marine projects, focusing on safety, quality, environmental compliance, and innovative solutions.
