The SVA Local History Group aims to promote and support research into the history of the Sid Valley and surroundings. The Group meets on the second Monday of every second month, in the new SVA HQ at 36a Fore street, next to Coffee#1, at 7pm. The usual format is for members to introduce discussion on topics of research that they are working on, but occasionally a full presentation is made of a completed piece of work.
While some members are actively working on specific areas of research with a view to publication, others just have a general interest in local history and come to hear what the latest findings are. Members of the group have access to a wide range of local records that may be of help to new researchers. Those who undertake research are encouraged to deposit the results of their efforts in the Museum.
The group is affiliated to the Devon Local History Society, the Devon History Forum and, through the SVA, to the Devonshire Association. Recent topics of discussion have included First World War street shrines, cataloguing the Cemetery burials, finds during building of the Parish Church extension, surroundings of the railway station, construction of the 1967 flood scheme on the River Sid, the Lousada family and the Cornish Family.
