Our Museum is run by volunteers, attracts between 12,000 – 15,000 visitors a year, and thrives on both local and tourist support.
The permanent displays track the development of the town from fishing village to the present day. They include a large collection of Regency and Victoriana items, famous people and royal visitors who either lived in or visited the town, a costume collection, an extensive lace collection, early paintings, prints and photographs of the area.
The 240 million year’s history of the Jurassic Coast is charted. There is a superb collection of rocks and fossils, including reptile footprints found in Sidmouth together with everyday items from the early period of the town’s history.
Throughout the season the Museum runs weekly guided Geology and Town Walks and Special Events.
The Museum will re-open on Friday, 31st March until Saturday 28th October 2017.

The Museum runs a number of events throughout the season.
The events include Young Visitors Activity days, a special Lace Day, and Walks and Talks celebrating our Geological History.
The Museum runs Guided Walks weekly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout the season. The walks are accompanied by a knowledgeable guide and are the perfect way to explore historic Sidmouth Town and the Jurassic Coast.

The Museum welcomes families with children of all ages.
Young Visitors have their own area with quizzes and games relating to items in the Museum.
Every Saturday 10am to 12 noon is “Drop In” morning activities include Fossil Rubbings, Origami, Collage and Storytelling. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
An exciting 2017 season begins on Wednesday 5th April with “Games, Toys and Childhood” 10.30am to 3.30pm
Wednesday 31st May “Wheels, Engines and Hot Air” 10.30am to 3.30pm
Our Shop may be small in size but it contains a large selection of cards, gifts and unique geology items.
There are many Local Publications including: Sidmouth’s Literary Connections, Sidmouth People & Places, Sidmouth Scientists, Sidmouth’s Lace, Sidmouth Rocks and numerous other titles.
Also available are framed and unframed prints of Sidmouth’s iconic painting ‘Long Picture’ by Hubert Cornish in 1814.
