Conservation and Planning
Due to the attraction of this area, developers are constantly looking to see where they might squeeze in another house - or even a whole housing development!
Each fortnight a small group of volunteers consider local Planning Applications and Plans. It is a serious matter to ensure that applications are correctly made.
Our committee acts as a 'watch-dog', and only recommends refusal where the developer is not acting in accordance with government guidelines, and therefore not in the best interests of the residents of our Valley. A recommendation for planning refusal only occurs in a very small proportion of cases.
Our AIM is to protect rather than prevent; to conserve rather than condemn; to preserve our heritage rather than see it polluted.
The Committee also reviews infringements to permitted signage such as in the High Street, etc.
The views of the SVA Conservation and Planning Committee are sometimes sought by local authorities where proposals might be thought inappropriate or unsuitable.
The Committee strives to maintain a close, happy and mutually beneficial working relationship with the Town, District and County Council; to ensure development in the Sid Valley is both relevant to local needs and is environmentally acceptable.

AREA OF OUTSTANDING NATURAL BEAUTY (AONB)
Much of the countryside surrounding Sidmouth has been designated an AONB. This means that special protection is given to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the Sid Valley landscape. The coast also forms part of England's first natural World Heritage site, the Jurassic Coast.
The East Devon AONB is notable for its varied and dramatic scenery, tranquil estuaries, sheer red mudstone cliffs, and wooded hills and combes.
