Sidmouth Arboretum was launched in May 2010 in order to create a civic arboretum, which covers all the land both public and private within the jurisdiction of Sidmouth Town Council. An arboretum is a collection of woody plants, which are trees and shrubs.
Although the architectural heritage is protected through the Grade listing system, there is little such protection for the landscape. Tree Preservation Orders and the AONB have both recently failed to protect the individual trees or areas of land from developers. We need to acknowledge the best trees as part of our heritage.
